PANANSALAN

Barangay Panansalan is located in the easternmost part of the Municipality. It is
bounded in the north by the Municipality of Monkayo. In the west by Barangay Mangayon,
Tamia, Ngan and San Miguel. Its south neighbor is the Municipality of New Bataan.
Panansalan’s absolute coordinate is 7°40’33.15” N 126°14’05.58” E. It is approximately 48.489
kilometers from Barangay Poblacion, Municipality of Compostela.

The named Panansalan was derived from Pansayanan a place where sayanan or palm
wine was commonly produced. In early age, MANDAYA’S are the first aboriginal settlers in the barangay namely: Melio, Edlay, Mapando, Bonifacio, Jacinto and Toledan families. According to
Manuel B. Ompang the word “MANDAYA” means “the first people upstream” derived from the
term “man” meaning “first”, and “daya” meaning “upstream” or “upper portion of the river” in
other words, they are “inhabitants of the Uplands”. They have their own sets of beliefs and
practices handed down by their ancestors. Such as Mandaya’s believed in Spirits (Diwata) and
Baylan (Healer) who usually possessed by Diwata in performing healing rituals in curing the ill.
The family being the smallest unit of the community is managed by the family elders. They are
the decision makers and managers over property. They also conduct marriage and settle
conflicts within the family. The community is headed by a tribal chieftain called
gimangkatadungan together with the council of elders or the mangkatadong. Mandaya people
survived through farming and hunting using dagger, spear, bow, arrows and hunting dogs.

Subsequently, the life of the Mandaya people in Panansalan start to evolved, developed and
adopted to change.

In year 1938, the first appointed Tenyente del barrio was Bonifacio Melio under Mayor
Pio Galenzoga administration. He followed by Selverio Edlay, then Cosme Mapando then by
Veloso Jacinto.

In 1993, Diosdado Toledan elected as Barangay Captain followed by Alfredo Tolendan
under Mayor Senen Suarez administration.

Sote Matibay elected as Barangay Captain since 2013 under Mayor Jessie S. Bolo
administration. Since then the development of Panansalan is remarkable with the support of the
Local Government Unit and different National Agencies.

Its population as determined by the 2020 Census was 1,081. This represented 1.20% of the total population of Compostela.
